Apex Local Showcase Recap

After a long drive down to Austin, Texas the Apex team put on a top level event in the lone star state.  After a beautiful sunrise at the Round Rock sports Facility  instruction was underway. Players from all over the country came to play, and multiple clubs and High Schools sent some of their very best.  Episcopal Dallas and Iron Horse LC lead the pack with three players each representing on the all star team.  Stickstar players also managed to catch evaluators and coaches attention with some physical hard nosed players that were not afraid to lead. Rudy Zarate in particular was a standout for Stickstar. Probably the biggest standout of the entire showcase was Jake Park from UNRL. His Athleticism shined throughout the day as he was able to win match ups at will.

After a long day of instruction from some of the top players in the MLL. Players got into gameplay and they did not disappoint.  The atmosphere and energy in the game sessions was infectious. The boys from Texas never stopped hustling and fought for every ball. After a long day of great lacrosse Apex evaluators and coaches hand picked all star caliber players that stood out amongst a group of some top level talent. What was most clear after this event was the amount of talent in Texas. Once given the opportunity to shine they made the most out of it and showed the Apex Team that we just might have to take another trip down!

Apex All-Austin Players

Mac Rodvold, Attack, Episcopal School Dallas, Stickstar

Rodvold showed up ready to play in Austin. On ball he is shifty and hard to get hands on.  He never seemed to put his head down and was able to find open shooters after drawing slides. Rodvold shined in the two man game working well off ball and able to finish in tight pulling off a crazy behind the back goal. After his performance in Round Rock, college coaches should be taking more notice.

Jake Park, St. Marks, UNRL National

Park was hands down the best offensive player on the field in Austin. He has the athleticism to win almost any one on one matchup, and looks good doing it. Park touts some extremely slick change of direction moves that left defenders guessing his next step all day. He can bring it from the outside as well as he can finish around the crease. Park's acceleration and top end speed make him a lethal force on the offensive end.

Price Johnson, LSM, Episcopal School Dallas, Stickstar

As athletic as they come Johnson was a force on all over the field in Austin. He is versatile enough to play both LSM and SSDM both at high levels. Johnson is aggressive on ground ball scrums and can burst out of groups with top level speed. His defense stance is textbook, as he always approaches broken down and with his full stick length out in front. He has high Lacrosse IQ, and it shows in his rotations and understanding of defensive sets. Johnson looks ready to be an impact player at the collegiate level.

John Young, Defense, Houston Christian, Team 91 MD

Young was a ballhawk all day at our local showcase in Austin, TX. His motor never seemed to drop as he pressured the ball all over the field. When he slides to the ball he is physical, but never allows the offensive player to break contain.  Young has violent checks that always seem to land perfectly, and dislodge the ball. He is top notch off the ground and has the handles to confidently push transition.  Young looks to be a great fit at for as a LSM for any top level collegiate program looking for a defender ready to impose his will.

Rudy Zarate, Goalie, St. Mary's Hall, StickStar

Rudy was a great surprise and find at the Apex local Austin. He has a naturally knack for making in tight saves with his body and played his angles well all day long. He was aggressively cutting down angles and using his body all day long!

Larkin Divine, Goalie, Anderson HS, Stickstar

Another impressive keeper from Stickstar with a solid frame, Larkin was just as aggressive as Zarate and made some impressive off-stick saves all weekend. There were several off-hip saves he made look easy that impressed the Apex Coaching Staff.

Harrison Hanson, Attack, Austin HS, Iron Horse

Harrison looks like a Canadian box player the way he dodged from the wing all day long and got underneath his defenseman. He could go underneath, handle pressure on his back or get over the top of his defenseman to the middle with a better angle. He was scoring tight angle goals with ease from the wing (or half-wall as they say in box). He has very slick hands and a knack for scoring goals, an exciting player to watch for sure.

Nico Baredield, Attack, Woodlands,

Nico was giving his defensman fits all day long with his range and cutting. He made several impressive cuts to the goal that were perfectly timed. An impressive rider as well, his hustle was noticeable on the rides and caused a few turnovers during the day. Nico was not afraid of absorbing checks either as he attacked the goal, often cutting throw several long poles.

Jake Swift, Midfield, Episcopal Dallas, 3D Texas

Rounding out a nice group of Episcopal players at the event, this lefty midfielder was giving fits to the defense all day long. A very athletic player with tremendous bounce and a great first step, he was able to quickly draw slides and move it, thus creating offense, or beat his man and then also beat the two slide with another move. This kid has a bright future ahead of him and will give opposing defenses and goalies a legitimate lefty midfielder to have to worry about!

Nathan McGuire, Defense, Grossmont, SoCal Bulls

This kid has SIZE! Probably about 6'3' and plays a physical yet finesse game, Nate was wrecking havoc on the offense and showed his prowess in the 1 on 1s especially. His feet were surprisingly quick for a big defenseman, which is what college coaches are looking for these days. He was also very solid on the clears, not afraid to take the ball over the midline and showed a lot of confidence ball handling. His stick checks were punishing and in a few instances de-sticked a few offensive players with them.

Mason Gallas, Defense, Highland Park, West Coast Starz

Arguable the smartest defenseman on the field all day long, Mason was in the right position at the right time. His off-ball support was almost perfect, and he was able to anticipate the offense two passes ahead of time and make some tremendous slides. Very slick off the ground as well, he picked up several balls in traffic that were impressive and made it look easy. Mason seems to be a student of the game in the way he always knew where to be and when, which is invaluable for any team defense.

Mason Muller, Attack, St. Johns, Iron Horse

Muller was putting the ball away from just about anywhere on the field in Austin. He works extremely well of the crease, as he was able to pop off into shooting spots and let it fly. Muller can also let it fly from range with a high heat right handed shot. Fighting on every GB and ride his motor never seemed to give out. Muller is a nightmare for defenses, and if he isn't respected the opposing goalie is not going to have a fun day.

Bryce Newmeyer, Midfield, Klien Oak, Texas Legacy

Newmeyer was able to do just about anything for his team in Austin. He is as tough as they come and embodies the life of the two way midfielder. Muller's athleticism and speed were on display as he slashed through defenses. On the defensive end There seemed to be no midfielder he couldn't square up and get hands on. Throw in Newmeyer's  great stickwork and ability to take draws and he seems to be the whole package.

Bradley Wittenburg, Midfield, McNeil, Austin Elite

Wittenburg is as face off man with a lethal offensive skillset. Once he wins the draw Wittenburg will stay and play, and thats when he becomes dangerous for defenses.  He has a heavy right hand step down that always seemed to find the corners. Once the defense started to respect his outside shot he burnt them on some top level change of direction moves. Wittenburg has great stick protection and finishing inside looks to come natural to him. Wittenburg can do it all for his squad, and when defenses sleep on this face off man they will get burnt.
